When you run any sort of a business, there are a lot of complex moving parts to it, and even though you are the owner, CEO, chairman, “boss”, or whatever, you can’t be an expert in all of them. You may be very good at designing and manufacturing the range of fingleferks that you sell, but nonetheless, when it comes to installing and maintaining the machinery required to produce them, you will need the services of an engineer, electrician, and so on.
Much the same applies when you want to get your website to the top of Google. (You do want your website at the top of Google, don’t you?). In that case you will need the services of an expert in SEO.
What’s SEO?
What’s SEO? SEO, or search engine optimization, is the art and science of getting a company, product, or service to the top of Google. Like so many things in life, there is more to it than meets the eye. First, you have to know it is even POSSIBLE. Many people think Google is objective, or beyond “influence”. Not true. Then you have ON PAGE search engine optimization or OFF PAGE efforts. I help Bay Area companies get to the top of Google, and the good news is you do not have to be an expert in SEO. You just have to know where to look for one (me). Tis what I do.
On page SEO involves designing the website in a way that Google approves. It needs to load fast. (Did you know that if a website takes more than three seconds to load, many people simply click away?). It needs to be easy for people to find their way around. It needs to make sense. It needs the right keywords in the right places. It needs long-tail keywords. It needs to have interesting and relevant content.
Content that is interesting, relevant, and up-to-date, is one of the reasons that I have this blog page that you are reading right now. Many websites have a blog page, and it is for that reason. The content also needs to contain keywords, which is why you will see the words “search engine optimization” mentioned in certain places in this blog. It is the subject that I am writing about, and when Google’s spiders crawl it they will see those words and think “Ah. This is about SEO, and it makes some good points. We like that”. And so, we hope, they will rank us where we want to be – on page one.
