Well, here we are again. Another summer, another opportunity to work with the incredible Stanford community on “Marketing without Money.” I can’t even remember how many years, I’ve taught this course… It’s an incredible amount of fun, and very inspiring, as the course draws people from all over the San Francisco Bay Area and from all types of organizations – from startups to huge companies, from non-profits, to struggling mom and pop local businesses. Nearly everyone can benefit from “marketing without money,” defined as using search engine optimization and social media marketing to propel a company to higher visibility.
Marketing Without Money: Course Description
From this year’s course description –
Creating buzz is a critical goal for both startups and established companies. Established companies leverage free blogs, Twitter, and Facebook to deepen customer relationships, while small businesses such as law firms and nonprofits use SEO (search engine optimization) to get to the top of critical Google searches. Today’s Internet world is a free-for-all of blogs, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Google+, and other social media sites too numerous to list.
This lecture-style course will help startups, small businesses, and even established companies understand the power of free on the Internet as well as the opportunities presented by Google SEO, social media marketing, and electronic word-of-mouth. Each week, we will investigate a different topic (such as how SEO influences Google results, Facebook success stories, and marketing on Google My Business). Where are the free marketing opportunities? What are the common best practices that define success? And how do you use the knowledge from these case studies to build or improve your own strategy? We will answer these questions and many others.
The course will start with SEO – both on page and off page search engine optimization tactics, get to the top of Google and Bing – for free… and all that jazz. Then we’ll look at local SEO / social media – Google+, Yelp, Tripadvisor and the like, and we’ll finally dive into Facebook marketing, Twitter marketing, how to optimize for LinkedIn, and YouTube. It’s all very ‘hands on’ with worksheets, discussion, and even – GASP – homework and quizzes. If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area – anywhere from San Francisco in the North, to San Jose in the South, not to mention Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, or Cupertino and you are interested in Internet marketing, I hope you can join me.
