I receive quite a few calls for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) expertise. Usually they go something like this:

Ring ring ring.

Hello.

I’m looking for Jason McDonald.

I’m Jason, how can I help you?

I’m looking for a Bay Area SEO expert.

OK, that would be me.

Bay Area SEO ExpertI have a small business here in San Francisco (or a tech startup, or a law firm…) and I need help getting to the top of Google.

OK I can help with that.

Well, how do I know you’re any good?

Well, what did you Google?

SEO Expert Bay Area.

And who was at the top?

You.

(Long pause).

OK, how could we work together

That pattern is very understandable. Google says something like 60% of searches are local in content. The irony is that some searches (e.g., SEO expert, Web designer) are often local because the user wants to meet “face to face” even though technically speaking he or she doesn’t need a real local expert. In fact, I have clients from Canada to New York City and have even had students in my online SEO classes from as far away as Australia… but people like local.

Dominating Local Bay Area Searches

So the logic here is that #1, yes I dominate the Bay Area searches for SEO experts, and yet #2, this really is ironic because I could work anywhere. However, if you are a local Bay Area business, the fact that I can dominate all of the Bay Area searches is proof-positive that I can help your local company. Whether you’re one of the lovely restaurants in the Bay Area with a view, or a struggling start-up tech firm. I love the San Francisco Bay Area, and certainly relish the thought of having more clients in the area. It’s fun to achieve total domination if even in the Bay Area. California, here we come!
