The digital media environment is like the evolution of life. It’s a constant chaos of birth, death, and rebirth.
Digital ancestors rose from the online ooze and began sliding, walking, and flying into what we have today: a modern digital civilization. Here are a few notable moments for the online technology timeline:
1993 – The first clickable web banner was launched. And only a few “experts” could create them at the time. It was the forefather of the annoying popup ad.
1998 – Google, MSN, and Yahoo! joined the online community, changing the possibilities of digital business and communications.
2004 – Facebook goes live, and everyone starts the race for FOMO.
2005 – Google Analytics appears. Website traffic can be scrutinized!
2006 – Twitter launched, and the public found it easier to make real-time snarky comments across the world.
2012 – It was clear digital media was here to stay, and businesses had to adapt. Online marketing began to play a vital role in advertising budgets.
I’ve seen new social media platforms grow, taking their place in the online world while new platforms rise to compete. Some survive, some fade away. And some digital tools continue to expand and unfold.

Business strategies for rising to the top of search engines like Google, Bing, and others have also changed. I’ve been watching the rise and growth of Search Engine Optimization and can tell you SEO never dies; it just evolves!
Individuals and businesses have found SEO an affordable avenue to reach more people with less effort. They can pay for ads or try to do things “organically.” Over the years, many companies have found it the best way to gain an edge over the competition and attract customers. And that’s what it’s supposed to do, so good for them.
Unfortunately, some businesses use “black hat” tactics to fool the public or beat the competition. Or an individual might be outright scamming the public using pay-per-click and domain names to their advantage. Methods change, but it never stops. And as an SEO Expert Witness, I know where to look for the digital media trail. If a business has been causing consumer confusion or messing with intellectual property, I’ll trace it back to the root of the problem. I’ve been around since before the first bot sent Google a search result (please don’t judge; I promise you I don’t look like Dumbledore).
SEO Never Dies, and Neither do the Legal Battles
With the rise of digital media business comes the emergence of legal disputes. Attorneys who specialize in this area need SEO-knowledge experts to succeed in court. And that’s what I do!
My digital forensics experience covers legal cases around; domain name expert witness, SEO contract disputes, defamation, Pay-Per-Click, and backlink investigations. Most of my testimonies involved digital advertising platforms like Google Ads, YouTube Ads, and Facebook paid or organic ads. If a jury needs to hear about the modern SEO environment on platforms like LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, I’m your guy. And if you’re struggling to explain the complexities of Google Analytics, I’m also an adjunct professor who teaches digital media classes at Stanford University Continuing Studies. It’s my career to help educate and prepare the next generation for the digital media world.
SEO isn’t going anywhere, and I can consult on a full range of online marketing forensics cases. If there’s search engine optimization involved in your court case, contact me (https://www.jasonmcdonald.org/about/), I’m the expert witness to find and expose the digital “DNA” left behind.
